Week 7
Date: 28 - 31/10/2013
(Monday - Thursday)
Title: Research and
Findings
In this week, the
research is based on systems that using barcodes for data acquisition. Barcodes
are widely used around the world for different kind of purpose. They are used
tracking items, inventory control and many more. Because of my project is based
on inventory control system (user scans the barcode to store the information of
the item), I focused on researching about the inventory control system that
uses barcode
Summarize of my
research:
Barcodes
are widely used for data acquisition system especially for inventory control
system. Normally this system is a set of hardware and software based tools that
automate the process of tracking inventory. The items that mostly used for
tracking are food, clothing, books, equipment, and any other item that
consumers, retailers, or wholesalers may purchase. Inventory system are mainly
used at the retail stores especially those with large number or variety of
products for sale. The system is also used in warehouse to track orders and
shipments, and for automated order processing. An inventory system normally works
by scanning the barcodes on the items. A barcode scanner is used to read the
barcode, and the information encoded by the barcode is read by the machine.
This information in then tracked by tracked by the central computer system. For
example, a purchase order may contain a list of items to be pulled for packing
and shipping. The inventory system can serve a variety of function in this
case. It can help a worker locates the items on the order list in the
warehouse, it can encode shipping information like tracking numbers and
delivery addresses, and it can remove these purchased items from the inventory
tally to keep an accurate count of in-stock items. Inventory system makes it
simple to locate and analyze inventory information in real-time with a simple database
search. This system is important to ensure quality control in business that
handles transactions revolving around consumer goods. Without a proper
inventory control, a large retail store may run out of stock on an important
item. Inventory system also helps minimize the risk of error and providing
valuable information about the store profits. While the inventory system
focusing on commercial sectors, this projects will be focusing more towards
personal usage such as in the office or home.
Warehouse using
barcodes
Warehouse normally
use barcode for tracking their item
Retail store
using barcode
Retail stores use
barcode for keeping track of their storage of the item and as “checkout” so
that the item will be read as sold item in the system for the store to monitor
their profit.
Hospital using
barcode
Hospitals use barcodes
to store the data of its patient in their system. The data may contain the
information about the patient, the type of sickness, the room of the patients
and etc.
After the research, I
came out with the block diagram for my system to work.
The
system starts with the barcode scanner scans the barcode. From the barcode
scanner, the program will detect the information and stores it in the database.
The information then will be sent to the website through the database. Finally
the information on the website will be connected to the android application.
The user will have the choice whether to get the information via the website or
the android application.
Then, I met with Dr Sabry to explain about
the block diagram and the system that will be produce.

Title: FYP Briefing
Second FYP Briefing
for Degree Programme
Briefing conducted at
Gemilang Hall.
The briefing is about
to give some further explanation for the students who are taking the final
project for Degree programmes since that the presentation day will be held 3
weeks from now. The briefing is about:
- · Explanation of Final Year Project Calendar for S2’2013
- · Presentation requirements
- · Proposal requirements
- · Final report requirements
